Jeez, Martin's killing it with these color jobs. The faded, ghostly flashback pictures and the... Just... Wow, what the hell?
Uhh... Eheh... Okay, before we forget again, should mention that we know we missed the anniversay picture this month. It fell on the same weekend as the Con and just after Martin got back from his Orlando trip, and while we were really struggling under the weight of these two chapters, so kinda got lost in the shuffle. Will put up a teaser for the new year at the end of this chapter. ^^
The scene Insomniac is specifically quoting back to Marvelous Man is this page:

Again, all of Marvelous Man's speeches and scenes were written so Insomniac could throw them back in his face and deconstruct them in their fight.
I've always had a problem with scenes where there's a ton of death and one character is said to have survived because they had willpower and determination. When you stop and think about it, it's really insulting to other people who've been killed. Marvelous Man's a soldier, and... to an extent I think praising himself above everyone else comes off kinda jaded when he'd logically know a lot of people who died in combat. At the same time, I also like Marvelous Man's line of "I KNEW these people!" since throwing that in his face IS a pretty low blow.
Likewise, if you look at a lot of Marvelous Man's speeches about saving the world, they ARE all about him; in particular go back and look at him scolding Qrime Qure's wife. No lip service is mentioned about the army, scientists, anything.
We also see Marvelous Man's face contorted in anger again.... When I wrote that in the last chapter I figured the "ugliness" was mostly due to the acid, though I think I like the idea of him just looking "Ugly" when he gets sufficiently angry. Sort of like an inverse of Win He Smiles.
I've actually kinda wanted to mention for a long time that Marvelous Man was designed in a lot of ways to look as generic as possible. Hence Insomniac's "handsome but not distinct" quote.

The sky being full of various previous shots of prior Marvelous Man scenes was not in the script or anything Adam mentioned wanting, it bares noting - it just kind of felt like something appropriate for the situation and like a good way to use the wide open space that panel had available. If you don't recognize the Ivy League part, that happened in Wright as Rayne starting here -

Funny thing actually on that - I wanted specifically a shot of the Tomorrow Men in the process of hitting Marvelous Man, but they never actually do so I had to settle on that one shot of them looking all foreboding. Compared to everyone else they really have no reason to be there, it's just that there are only so many times we've really seen bad things happen to him so far so you kind of take what you can get to that end.
Was actually kind of awkward to do, since this stuff was all stuff that wasn't really meant to be reused in later shots or anything, and so I had to on each page basically trim the background out of it, and get it into a usable form for this. Bares nothing I added a shirt onto Marvelous Man in the bribe part and removed the darkness effect, to make it look more like when that actually happened, but it didn't wind up terribly obvious that's what's going on by the time I finished with the effects over it. Still, the page wasn't really a massive time sink or anything, just took a little trial and error figuring out how exactly to approach what I had in mind and some prep work getting there.
But yeah, on the whole pretty happy with this one. Took some doing to be sure, but quite happy with the end result and do hope everyone enjoys.
